Drawing on research from Project Zero’s Agency by Design project, this course offers classroom teachers, maker educators, administrators, and parents an opportunity to explore firsthand maker-centered learning practices and the opportunities they afford.

Course Designers

Edward Clapp
Edward P. Clapp, Ed. D. is a project director at Project Zero where he is a member of the core research team working on the Agency by Design (AbD) initiative—an investigation of the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning—and the Creating Communities of Innovation initiative—an action research study geared towards developing educational innovations amongst a network of schools in the United Arab Emirates. Edward’s current research interests include creativity and innovation, maker-centered learning, design thinking, and contemporary approaches to arts teaching and learning. In addition to his work as an educational researcher, Edward is also a Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Edward’s forthcoming book Participatory Creativity: Introducing Access and Equity to the Creative Classroom (Routledge) will be published later this summer, as will the book Maker-Centered Learning: Empowering Young People to Shape their Worlds (Jossey-Bass), co-authored by Edward and the Agency by Design research team.

Jennifer Ryan
Jennifer Oxman Ryan is a project manager and researcher at Project Zero, working on the Pedagogy of Play project, which seeks to understand the relationship between play and playful learning and investigate what it means to have play be central to schooling. Jennifer has been with Project Zero since 2006, having worked previously on Agency by Design; the Good Play and Trust and Trustworthiness projects; and Qualities of Quality: Excellence in Arts Education and How to Achieve I. Her current research interests include arts and maker-centered education, school/community partnerships, professional learning communities, and play. She is former project manager of the Agency by Design (AbD) project, exploring the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning. With her colleagues on AbD, Jennifer co-authored the book Maker-Centered Learning: Empowering Young People to Shape their Worlds (Jossey-Bass), due to be published in the summer of 2016.

 Course Instructors

Julie Rains
Passionate about fostering positive interactions and relationships, Julie Rains is committed to collaborating with students and teachers from around the world. She believes it is a true joy to experiment, investigate, and grapple with ideas to encourage reflection from a variety of viewpoints. In addition to co-instructing the TLMCC online course, Julie facilitates professional learning at the local, state, and national level. She has facilitated sessions at multiple Project Zero Perspectives Conferences, served as a fellow, study group leader, and mini course instructor for Project Zero Classroom Summer Institute, and is proud to share her students were featured in Dr. Ron Ritchhart’s book, Creating Cultures of Thinking. An avid reader, she is committed to life-long learning, and currently, a doctoral candidate at University of Michigan-Flint. Prior to that, she earned her Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Oakland University and attended Michigan State University, where she earned her B.S. and M.A. in the areas of Language Arts, Learning Disabilities, and Emotional Impairment. She is in her eleventh year as a teacher for Rochester Community Schools and dedicated to fostering meaningful learning opportunities, especially for students with disabilities. She is currently interested in the impact of participatory creativity on collaborative efficiency, creating opportunities to support all learners through making, and transforming the media center into a Shipwreck-Treehouse-Wonderland.

Lisa Yokana
An educator for over fifteen years, Lisa Yokana is the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) coordinator at Scarsdale High School, where she designed and teaches a STEAM course sequence for Scarsdale’s Design Lab. She works with teachers across the disciplines to integrate Design Thinking and Making into their curriculum. She served as a Teacher Coach for IDEO’s Teachers Guild, guiding other teachers from around the world through the Design Thinking process in order to solve the biggest challenges in education and has also authored curriculum for outside organizations including the U.S. History Advanced Placement course. She has received multiple grants from Scarsdale Schools’ Center for Innovation to research innovation education programs and integrate Maker projects across levels. Project Zero's Agency by Design research project selected her as one of thirty Maker Teachers across the country to participate in their learning community. Lisa leads Innovation Education, Design Thinking and Maker workshops and presents at conferences, encouraging educators to shift their practice. She earned her BA in Studio Art and French Literature from Williams College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and her Master's Degree in Art History from Columbia University. She also has a degree in building and district level administration from Stony Brook University. Lisa is married to her best friend and has two wonderful adult daughters. She enjoys running, paddle boarding, swimming, hiking and biking in her spare time, as well as teaching herself new tools and technologies to make things. 

Jessica Ross (Mentor Instructor)
Jessica Ross is a senior practitioner specialist working at Project Zero on the Agency by Design Project.  Jessica was a founding team member of the Global Learning Charter Public School, where she taught grade 5-8 humanities for ten years.  A licensed principal, she has also served as Title I Director and English Department Chair.  Jessica graduated from Hunter College with degrees in both elementary education and history and is currently completing a master’s degree in Professional Writing at the University of Massachusetts.  Her passion for teaching was recognized in 2007 when she was voted Teacher of the Year by the Standard Times and Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.  Since 2006, Jessica has participated in and facilitated numerous Artful and Visible Thinking workshops in Costa Rica, Amsterdam, Cambridge (Massachusetts), Rochester (New York), and several other locations throughout the U.S.
